XXXV IULTCS CONGRESS 2019
Sporting free-for-all!
It all started on a rainy Wednesday with the spare parts dealer in the 1950s yard and the new tenant from next door. Bernd Dörr found a load of old sports mats and some faulty sports equipment that had been left by the roadside for collection. Curious, he asked the spare parts dealer what they were about, and found himself in a newly opened repair shop for sports hall equipment. The old leather was made even more beautiful by the signs of age and use it bore, and it seemed logical to use it for other things. A quick question to find out whether he could take the leftovers with him, and it was off to the sewing machine. He had the idea of making bags out of the leather from the old sports equipment and mats, and the potential for a brand with a genuine sporting background, emotion and all kinds of memories for everyone made absolute sense. All that was needed was the right name and an interesting look: Markus Kreykenbohm, retro advertiser and right-hand man to the „father of gymnastics“ took over the creation and marketing of the brand and chose the right partners in photographer Maria Brinkop and model Sara-Pia Zimmermann.
„Some products simply stand out from the very beginning. That was the case with these bags. It is quite a simple idea but one with an almost magical appeal. You simply have to touch and wear them to awaken your memories.“
Daniela Kohlen, Pro 7/Galileo, ispo brandnew Magazin„If I close my eyes, feel the knobbly plastic and leather with my fingers and take a deep breath, then everything is as it once was. There was the pain, the sweat and sometimes even blood. Then I appreciate how hard these blue mats were and realise that nothing can happen to my laptop in a sleeve made from this material. Well, almost nothing. The mats did not save me from many a graze.“
Jeremias Radke, Redaktion MACLife„The PE lesson myth – the moment when you touch the worn, soft leather when vaulting over the horse and the slap from falling backwards on to the blue mat after the high jump – such memories firmly convey Zirkeltraining‘s bag brand. Bernd Dörr, who processes discarded covers from sports equipment and mats, always knows how to make the best out of his products.“
